Disgusted

I watched part of a CBC documentary on Romeo Dallaire last night. I'm always so horrified when I realize how all of the "powerful" nations sat back and allow the horrific events in Rwanda to unfold. The worst part is, it's still happening only slowly and gradually with minimal aid from us. The people dying in the whole African continent (amongst other places) from malnutrition and disease that could be quite preventable. But what do we do? We pay someone 13 million dollars to play hockey. Yeah, our priorities are straight.

i have seen him in interviews. it is so heartbreaking and it makes me feel so utterly powerless. like the organs inside my body hurt and there is no way to soothe them. the movie lord of war had the same affect on me. it focuses on the arming of african militants. we are so powerless to do what is right. so much evil. it left me thinking that there is no good left in the world. and that my white tidy suburban world is a sham. it felt shaming.

I met the man that made this doc and the Rwandan ambassador to Canada in June. We screened the doc then had a question and answer period with the two of them. The ambassador said that one of the most heartbreaking things was that this was done inter-family, meaning that brother was killing brother, father was killing son, and all because of a retarded system of putting people in tribes based on head size that Belgians dreamt up in the 40s. Can you imagine? The ambassador said that the ID cards marking Tutsis and Hutus are now not allowed and that things are being done. There's room for improvement, but that brother against brother war is over and things are healing. My feelings for the UN however, are permanently sowered, no matter how much good Angelina Jolie does. And Bill Clinton is a fuckhead. A lot of this is his fault directly.

During the screening I sat beside a black South African woman who immigrated to Canada two years ago. She said that they get CNN over there too, and no one even in South Africa knew. Because when the media doesn't care, no one does. That's why I shake my head at those who want to change the world by getting into politics. You change the world by getting into media.
